Causes of Vitiligo

In worldwide millions of people have vitiligo(Leucoderma). It can develop at any age. Nearly half get it before they reach 20 years of age. Vitiligo affect men and women equally. Any area of skin can be affected. However, the most common sites involved are the hands, neck, face and scalp.

Vitiligo occurs when the cells that producing melanin die or stop functioning. The clear cause is unknown, several possible reasons are explained. Autoimmunity might be one of the possibilities. This means that your own immune system (which normally protects your body from infections) causes damage. The involved patches of skin become lighter or white. Other possible reason could be a trigger event such as sunburn, stress or exposure to industrial chemicals. Most of the cases are sporadic but in some there will be family history.

The vitiligo progression is occurs differently in each person. In some people the white patches do not spread. But usually the white patches can spread other areas of the body, for a few people, vitiligo spreads slowly, over a few years. For others, spreading happens quickly. Some have developed a lot of white patches when physical or emotional stress.

There is no known cure for vitiligo, but treatment may improve your skin’s appearance by restoring its color and control the spread of the condition.
